GBBC and THE POINT FOUNDATION CHECK PRESENTATION IN NEW YORK
Posted: November 18, 2009
On Wednesday, November 11, 2009, The Greater Boston Business Council presented its first check to The Point Foundation, a national non-profit organization that distributes higher education scholarships to GLBT students desiring to advance their education by attending colleges and universities. The GBBC, along with many other corporations, businesses, non-profits, business chambers and individuals from around the country contribute together in order to create a stronger and more valued scholarship program.
Today, The Point Foundation provides scholarships, mentorship, leadership training and hope for students of merit who have been marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Additionally, Point Foundation provides programs that affect social change by challenging attitudes that contribute to social stigma and its resulting prejudice, which is often experienced by those in the LGBT community. Applicants to Point Foundation and subsequent scholars, turn to Point Foundation because their families are either unable or unwilling to support them and their goals for higher education. Each student has a compelling and inspiring story of overcoming incredible obstacles and hardships. Many have been cruelly rejected by their families, forced to leave home, and cut off from all financial support. Yet Point Scholars are excelling at our nation’s most prestigious and demanding universities and colleges, while also leading in a variety of extracurricular and community service activities.
The GBBC is proud to be a supporter of GLBT youth’s higher education and the development of our future GLBT leaders and professionals in Massachusetts and throughout the United States.
